If you've ever wondered about the small concrete boat planters displayed through Port Aransas, Texas, these are called Farley Boats. We recently toured the Farley Boat Works Museum where we got to view boats & learn about the craft, learn about the history of the Farley boats & hear about the upcoming Wooden Boat Festival.
The Farley brothers, Barney and Fred, came to the Texas coast in 1910. Seeing the opportunities for tarpon fish guide services and crafts to catch the tarpons in, the Farley's began their wooden boat building company. The first Farley boat built exclusively for Port Aransas Tarpon fishing was in 1915.
Fishing for Tarpon in Port Aransas became so popular that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was known to fish here, using the guide services of Barney Farley and in one of the wooden Farley boats.
Farley Boat Works remained in business and continued building boats until 1973, marking six decades of history making operations. The Port Aransas Preservation and Historical Association bought the property in 2011 and continues with boat building classes, museum tours and preservation efforts.
The Farley Boat Works Museum remains a must-see opportunity when spending time in Port Aransas.
So, what about those concrete planters? Well, they are an artistic reproduction of the original Farley boats and created by the Port Aransas Garden Club as part of a beautification project.
