The end of the year and beginning of a new year is the perfect time to declutter to sell your house.
An organized home is essential to make it appealing to potential buyers. Even if you are not planning to put your home on the market until the spring, it’s a good idea to start now so the project is not overwhelming. Selling a home and moving can be mindboggling, but I’m going to tell you how to organize your house to sell.
With all large tasks its always easier to break the process down
into smaller steps. Not only is this
much less daunting but it will have an immediate impact on your overall
results. Keep
reading to see my home organization tips and tricks.
Start with one room at a time. It’s easier to focus on one space and you will feel a sense of accomplishment when one room is finished and you can check that one off your list.
Set out a box for items to donate, a box for trash, and a box for “I don’t know what to do with this.” Most likely by the time you finish your house and get back to that box, you will have a place to store the item or know if it can go into the dispose of box. And remember the rule, if you haven’t needed or used it in a year, you probably don’t need it at all.
Buyers often look inside cabinets, pantries, closets and other storage areas, so it’s important to have these spaces clean and tidy, just like the rest of your home. Discount stores are often great places to purchase plastic bins and baskets for organizing the items you need to keep. Professional organizers always advise to categorize, contain, and label. This makes it easy for everyone in your household to find things, plus it looks good!
Clear countertops, shelves, and floors to create a clean and inviting space. And that includes excess furniture. Parting with your grandma’s old cabinet or a worn-out chair or sofa that is rarely used is an important part of creating an open feel.
Old magazines, newspapers, books you’ve already read, mis-matched socks, old cosmetics, and expired cans of food are easy items you can start with if don’t have the time to tackle a room.
But trust me, once you’ve gotten started – you’ll feel motivated to get the whole house decluttered and organized. And don’t forget the garage! Since it’s often the last room viewed, a clean garage can make a lasting impression on a buyer.
Dealing with paper! I
have to admit – this is my problem area.
Even though I have file folders and bins set up to control the incoming
mail and documents I deal with on a daily basis, this is an area I struggle
with. A few things I’ve recently learned
in my quest to tackle the paper mess is first – only touch it once.
Don’t let the papers pile up on your desk or
countertops. Open it, Read it, Pay it
(if it’s a bill), File it (if it’s something you need to keep), or throw it
away if its junk. And speaking of
filing – guess what – it’s time to go paperless if you haven’t already. Investing in a scanner and filing documents
electronically will help keep your home office neat and organized.
Remember, organizing and presenting your home in the best
possible way can help it stand out in a competitive market and potentially lead
to a quicker sale at a favorable price. Consulting with a local real estate
agent can also provide valuable insights and guidance throughout the process.
The good news – is once you complete this, you’ll have a
head start on packing and preparing to move.
